Jump Combinations

At the Juvenile level currently the skater can complete two jump combinations of two jumps each. They also can repeat three different double jumps. If they intend to do a 2F + 2Lo combination and they have a weak landing or an error on the 2F, then they need to know they can and need to add the 2Lo to the second 2F. Otherwise, this violates the repeated jump rule that states, “If repeated, at least one attempt must be part of a jump of a combination or sequence.” If the skater does not attempt a jump combination on the second 2F then they received 70% (actually 73%) of the value of the 2F. This is located under the V1 column and the value of the 2F is reduced from 1.9 to 1.4.

Coaching Suggestion:

During training it is best to work through the different scenarios as they arise instead of simply telling the skater in advance what they should do and assuming they will remember. This process is called “guided discovery” and is done after the program is completely skated and the coach calmly asks the skater why they made the decision for fixing the error in a certain way and then leads them through a series of step by step discoveries toward the predetermined goal of the correct choice (Wales). This method usually imprints the value and importance of knowing exactly what to do in the most appropriate and effective way.

In the worst case scenario the skater lands the second 2F also poorly and must add either a 1Lo (includes an intentional “half loop”), 1T or tap toe 1A in order to fulfill the repeated jump rule. In the best case scenario, the skater performs the intended combination on the second 2F.

The above example is an important illustration of why at the developmental level it may be best to NOT backend load the program if the skater is not consistent on completing the intended jump boxes because if the jump combination is set on the second 2F and a major error occurs (fall or step out) the skater loses the points of the jump combination plus receives only 70% of the value of the 2F as there is no second chance on the jump combination with this strategy. This is a very costly error in total points.
